Ever looked at your CV and wondered if it makes sense to anyone but you?
If you’ve zigzagged across industries, taken career breaks, or followed your passions into unexpected places, you may feel messy but it is actually more common than you think.
Many professionals today are quietly living what’s known as a non linear career path and yet, there’s still a part of us that wonders if we’ve somehow done it “wrong”.
We’ve been taught to believe that careers should move neatly upwards: one job leading to the next, each promotion stacking on the last. But real life is rarely that tidy. And with today’s shifting of industries and evolving priorities, the linear career story is more myth than map.
At The Happy Mondays Co., we believe it’s time to change the narrative and recognise the value in the path you’ve already walked.
So, where did this idea of a straight-line career even come from? Historically, career success followed a predictable script:
Study hard → get a stable job → climb the ladder → retire comfortably.
This model made sense in an era of lifelong employment and defined roles. But the present times are very different.
Today’s world looks nothing like the one that shaped that script. We’re facing economic unpredictability, rapid technological shifts, and industries that are constantly being redefined.
New roles are created faster than old ones fade. Freelancing, career pivots, and hybrid working models are becoming the norm, not the exception.
Still, many of us feel pressured to justify our career choices. We’re asked to “connect the dots” in job interviews, to explain “career gaps”, or to show progression that looks logical on paper.
But what if the problem isn’t your path and in fact, the outdated framework we’re trying to fit it into?
A non linear career path is simply one that doesn’t follow the traditional staircase model.
It could look like:
It's a career change. Reinvention. Pauses. Passion projects. Lateral moves. It’s a living, evolving reflection of you.
And rather than being signs of indecision or lack of focus, these shifts are often grounded in clarity, courage, and adaptability.
For some people, at the time of experiencing their non-linear career path, they would typically feel like they had a lack of focus, but upon reflection, there’s usually more to the story they have yet to see.
For instance, a client that was lost and had switched multiple roles later realised that phase one of their career concerned building a technical foundation, whereas phase two was about broadening out to compliance and phase three revolved around management. Today, he is leveraging all this experience to step into his next role.
We need to stop seeing non-linear career paths as the fallback option. They’re often where the real growth happens.
If your career doesn’t fit in a straight line, it’s probably because you were busy building depth and not just climbing heights.
A non linear career path often brings:
Take, for example, Sarah, who spent five years in corporate project management. Burned out and curious, she transitioned into UX design.
Her ability to coordinate teams, manage timelines, and keep users front-of-mind made her a standout designer. Her zigzag became her differentiator.
In a world that values career agility, being someone with multipotentiality – someone with many interests and abilities – may very well be an asset.
Instead of trying to defend your career path, why not learn how to own it?
Here’s how to craft a powerful narrative:
One helpful way to frame it: Past → Pivot → Purpose
Where you’ve been, what made you change, and what drives you now.
This kind of story connects. It shows thoughtfulness. And it’s a lot more compelling than “I did what I was supposed to.”
